Anchorage, AK

Thanks to everyone for the Happy Anniversary wishes. Here’s to many more!

We arrived in Anchorage on Sunday and will be here for a week. In fact, we’ll be in the following small towns for a week each (Seward, Soldotna and Homer) due to a scheduling decision I made in the very early planning of this trip. After these four locations we will be taking a ferry for 6 days through the Inside Passage from Homer, AK to Bellingham, WA. Harvey will be on the lower portion of the boat and we have a basic cabin above. It’s a no frills way to get back to the mainland saving us 2800 miles of driving. They have a cafeteria onboard and we’ll have some of our own food. I’m just glad to have a cabin with a bathroom and a window! The ferry only goes from Homer to Bellingham, in July, on the 10th and the 24th. So when I made the reservations I figured the 24th would work. Then it happened that we could’ve gone on the 10th but the same cabins were sold out. Some people pitch a tent on the deck and use the public restrooms but that’s not for us. So we kept the reservation we had and now we have two extra weeks to fill. Hence the long one-week stays in these little towns.

We saw this sliding board at a local park. Gives me the creeps that it looks like he’s throwing up.

Robins are everywhere and we love seeing them. I wonder why this one is so grumpy

This is Fireweed. I had never seen it before this trip

Yesterday we took our tandem out on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. It was very hilly, curvy and busy. It was about 70 degrees out and sunny.

In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake devastated the whole area. This part of the trail commemorates it.

After the bike ride we played disc golf.

The cottonwood trees are blowing their tiny white puffs everywhere. Sometimes it looks like snow on the ground. I looked up and saw the clumps of white that have yet to fall.

This gnarly tree has a real strong will to survive

And now for the best part. When we were on the bike trail people were stopping and gawking. This is a sure way to know that there is wildlife nearby. Sure enough, there was a mama moose and three babies eating. We stayed watching for many minutes as more people arrived. Everyone was totally silent. A mama with her babies is the most potentially dangerous moose to be near but she was just happy eating and we were all just so happy to catch a glimpse.
