Driving to Watson Lake, YT

Monday, June 13th

We had a nice drive with almost no traffic and just a few small gravel or construction areas on the road.  Our normal driving day is 4 hours, give or take.  Today was the day to see animals along the highway.  We saw two moose, one caribou, more stone sheep, a bear, bison and the cutest little wet fox.  He showed up right outside the driver’s window after we stopped at a turnout to eat our second cinnamon roll.  It was as yummy today as it was yesterday.  This little fox looked like he wanted a handout but we weren’t about to feed him.

Black bears can be many colors. This is one of them. Still waiting to see a grizzly… from a distance.

The skies were clear until we arrived in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory.  Everything looks more dismal in the rain and this town of 1500 people looked pretty sad.  We were supposed to stay two nights but changed our reservation to one. The biggest draw in this town is the Sign Post Forest.  People have been adding signs since 1942 and we were no exception.

By now we’ve driven about 5100 miles and 98 hours.  We’ve listened to a few audio books and sometimes the radio.  Satellite reception has been good except in the mountains some of the time.

  1. The wildlife is such a fun part of Alaska. We did see a few grizzlies in Denali, one with her cubs.

  2. I am so happy for you guys. You are experiencing so many great things. Those cinnamon roll were well worth turning around for.

  3. Cool! Another fun day of exploring Alaska. Love all the animal sightings. You must have known about the Sign Post Forest ahead of time. Hope that license plate didn’t come off your vehicle! 🙂

    • Actually, we won’t get to Alaska til Saturday. This has all been in Canada…Alberta and British Columbia.
Yep, I read about the sign post forest. Ha!That was an old license plate.

  4. Love the pictures of the animals! We used to see bears and moose walking through our yard growing up in Duluth.

  5. Hmmm, was that Steve on the ladder? If so, new beard? The wildlife is definitely a major plus. I generally trust four-legged critters more than the two-legged varieties. 8^)
    Carry on.

    • No, Steve’s not the guy on the ladder. But he did stop shaving a few weeks ago. I’m loving the beard.
